Again, BAINBRIDGE Saves Lives at Sea

On Friday, 28 December 2007, USS BAINBRIDGE (DDG 96) was in the right place at the right time for a second instance during her maiden deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. Earlier in the year, this Norfolk, Virginia-based destroyer joined with a NATO effort to rescue emaciated Yemeni Army soldiers following a catastrophic volcano disaster. Through direct and concentrated effort from the entire crew, three more people may be added to the list of BAINBRIDGE saved.
While the ship was patrolling in international waters, Conning Officer Ensign Dustin Moore noticed a curious occurrence on the deck of a small fishing boat positioned along the ship’s track. A man waving an orange flag was attempting to gain attention the attention of the BAINBRIDGE crew. Confirming initial suspicions as to the man’s intent, Junior Officer of the Deck Ensign Jon Sieg remarked, “His desperate gestures made it clear to us that the people on the boat were in need of assistance.”
Endeavoring to learn more about the situation, the bridge team attempted radio communication to no avail. Requiring more information regarding this unique scene, the ship sent a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) Team to the distressed vessel. Initial communications with the crew were mildly successful, however, since the three stranded men spoke only thickly accented French. Thankfully, one of BAINBRIDGE’s officers spoke the language and returned with Ensign Adam Jones as the official translator. When the Team’s small boat arrived once more at the stranded vessel, Team Leader Sonar Technician Chief Victor Meza conducted a quick visual sweep of the topside spaces. After concluding that the boat was safe, two BAINBRIDGE engineers found an engine room in extreme disrepair. No fuel, no battery power, and a completely destroyed engine plagued the aft-most space, worsening with each 30-degree roll, and filling with water. The engineers concluded that the boat was becoming more and more unstable.
Conversations with the boat’s inhabitants gleaned much information as to the events leading to this perilous situation. Through his translation, Ensign Jones learned that on 8 December 2007 these men had departed for Benghazi, Egypt from Libya when their boat experienced catastrophic engine failure. When BAINBRIDGE arrived on the scene, the two Tunisians and one Libyan had been adrift for 20 days. The men were in need of assistance and both agreed to abandon their vessel in exchange for refuge. Realizing they had been saved, the fishermen expressed sincere gratitude for their rescue.
Preparations to receive the ship’s newest guests aboard BAINBRIDGE began in concert with finalization of the rescue process and started immediately when the three men arrived. Hospital Corpsman First Class Byron Davis and his team performed medical assessments while Master at Arms First Class Dalton Mauldin and Command Master Chief Steve Rafter verified accommodations and appropriate security. Operations Officer Lieutenant Troy Denison coordinated with the Greek National Authority to arrange a personnel transfer. BAINBRIDGE set a course for Souda Bay where the three men were transferred to a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel.
As BAINBRIDGE departed to continue her operational schedule, VBSS team member Engineman First Class Timothy Richards commented that, “The hard preparedness and training that we as destroyermen practice paid dividends in [this] real situation.” Reflecting on a full day of accomplishment, Ensign Jones, the translator throughout the entire process, echoed these comments. “You never know what to expect in this job,” he remarked. “It’s what the training is about. You can never be sure [if] one day will be the same as the last…”
Once again, this mighty ship had saved lives, furthering its now international reputation of competence, dedication, and discipline.

Christmas 2007

Christmas this year was spent in Arizona. We stayed with my Uncle in Flagstaff. It was my mom, Victoria, Uncle and I. It was hard not having Vic there but we got to talk to him on the phone and he suprised with some really great gifts. We kept ourselves busy playing in the snow and doing some last minute shopping. Of course you can always count on my family to cook and eat and cook some more and then eat some more. I did end up gettin sick on Christmas morning and that wasn't very fun. But was better over the next couple of days and had a great time visiting friends and family in Phoenix.

NYC

I took my mom to NYC for her 55th birthday. Victoria and I had never been and mom hasn't been since 1964. We had such a fun time just us girls. Mom and I always find something to laugh about....NYC gave us lots of opportunity for that. Here is a slide show of most of our adventures....

Gingerbread Houses

The Boom Boom sisters plus kids came over to make Gingerbread Houses. We tried to make them but unfortunetly a few of them ended up in the trash. But the most important part is we had fun trying!!!

Performance Rehearsal

Victoria takes a dance class at school. This Monday I snuck in and took a couple of pictures of the class practicing for their recital. Here is a sneak peek.....

They are supposed to be stretching.......

I think they are trying to make a train............

Mamaw's Birthday

Mamaw's gift was a trip to NYC for her birthday this year. But the day couldn't go by without having a piece of birthday cake. Here she is with her cake and the birthday cake flowers Vic had delivered to her from overseas. It made her cry. She also got a 2lb box of See's Candy from her son-n-law and had the biggest sugar rush of her life! Happy Birthday Mamaw...We love you!

Winter Wonderland

Miss Tiffany and Miss Casey's Three Year Old Preschool Class
Wave Childrens Learning Center

Victoria's classroom went on a field trip to the Winter Wonderland at Hunts Club. I was a parent chaperone and it was really great watching all these 3 and 4 year old kids getting so excited over seeing puppets and faux snow! It was really cold out too so we definetly were thrown into the Christmas Spirt.

Riding on the Bus

Angels In Action

Every year at our church they do this function for the Children called Angels in Action. The kids watch a play, sing songs, eat breakfast, meet the Beach Frog and then go around to different stations to make crafts to take home. This year Victoria went with her buddies Landon and Lance. She made some really nice stuff and thought it was super cool to hang out with the Beach Frog.

Play House Disney Live

We figured since she like Arthur so well that she would LOVE to see Disney Live as Mickey and Minnie Mouse are two of her favorite characters. Infact...this was just a preview as she has a huge surprise in store.....we are all going to Disney World when Daddy gets home. Shhh....don't tell.

Thanksgiving at Uncle's

My Uncle Roger has a home in West Layfayette, IND about 4 miles from the Purdue campus. He had us there for Thanksgiving this year. We had a great time. Victoria was greated with a bundle of new toys to play with and all mom and I did was eat the yummy food! We missed Vic alot this year as he was in Malta but it was good to be with family and there is always next year!

Ok...I will color while you cook!

What is so funny?????

Arthur Live

My mom and I took Victoria to see Arthur Live on Stage. She was fascinated by it. We had front row seats in the orchestra section so we could see really well. She sat there the whole time with her mouth open watching. When we left the performance she told me she was so excited to see Arthurs house and school for real!!

Halloween Clown

There was a parade and party at Victoria's school. Since I work there part time....I decided to dress up too. There are such a great group of women I work with. Victoria enjoys school and had a fun time dressing up as a clown. She was ready for the make up to come off after an hour though. We got to go to the church and trick or treat on all the Pastors doors. At the end of the route was the Beach Frog....now that is exciting.

Pumpkin Carving and Cookie Decorating

We forgot to buy our pumpkin carving kits this year. Cody wanted a spider and Victoria didn't care. So I just made an old generic face for Victoria and Jamie tried to make a spider for Cody. Victoria refused to touch the inerds....she thought it was "grossening." So Thankfully we bought a Halloween cookie decorating kit and they got very involved in decorating those.

Trunk or Treating

Every year we go to Atlantic Baptist Church for their Trunk or Treating. We it was special this year because Jamie was in town and she got to go with us. All the members of the church line their cars up in the back and decorate them. Then the children go from trunk to trunk to get candy. By the end of the night you have a whole Walmart bag full of candy. It is alot of fun seeing how all the different cars decorate. They also have games and a live band. This year they made an Wizard of Oz Tent to walk thru and they were giving away full size candy bars....it was crazy!

Daddy Birthday

Vic was home for a week during his deployment. It was nice because we actually got to celebrate his birthday with him. It wasn't as big of a hoopla as we normally like to do since his stop home was unexpected. But he had some gifts and a cake. He had to leave to fly to Italy the day of his birthday but just being home made this 32nd birthday....special!

Kangaroo Jacs

Vic and Victoria like to go to Kangaroo Jacs. Since Vic was home we decided to take Jamie and Cody there too. They had a ball climbing the tall latters and sliding down the slides. The favorite for everyone is the big 20ft jumper. Its so high up to the top that when you slide down your stomach drops....its fun for big kids too :)

Daddy is Here

Daddy is on deployment but this week he had to fly home a fellow sailor who shot himself in the foot. Because of that....we got to spend a week with him that was unexpected. It was so wonderful to get to see him. It really broke his deployment up. What a gift from God to do that for us. We miss him so much. While he was home....we all went to Hunt Club to do the pumpkin patch and pet the animals.

Yankee Candle

The Yankee Candle Factory in Williamsburg is huge. We took the kids there as they have hayrides, make your own candle, decorate a pumpkin, face painting and a Winter Wonderland that really snows. It was a short 1.5 hour drive up to Williamsburg from Virginia Beach. It smells so good in there and you want to buy everything!!!

Crazy Girls

Mom and Jamie decided to color each others hair.....I am not sure if I had more fun taking the pictures or if they had more fun doing it! The dye ended up on the walls and sink.....after that it was to the TV to laugh at our girl "cheryl"........

Girls Night-Oct

I have this awesome group of girlfriends that I have become very close with in Virginia. We refer to ourselves and the Boom Boom Sisters. I see the Boom Boom's all the time but once a month we make time for ourselves to get together and do something without the kids or husbands. Being that we are all military wives...we are slowly losing some Boom Booms. But we vow to always remain close and keep in touch. This month we all got together for dinner and a night of Karaoke. Dawn and Sarah are the only ones who really sang but it was fun watching and singing along with all the other people there.
